HOME FOUND TREASURES

Yesterday morning I woke up and like magic the bright sun had disappeared to an episode of thunder and heavy rain fall.

I happen to love the rain. Especially since the past weather has been so hot and humid, and even more so because there hasn’t been much of it.  A heavy downpour turns the outside peaceful and desolute, and I find it cozy and comforting. Being the homebody that I am, the #1 reason why I love rain is that I don’t feel guilty about staying inside. I can watch television and read and peruse the internet without the sun nagging me to come out and enjoy it!

I spent this particular rainy day going through my room cleaning stuff out as well as adding to my bag of things to sell in what I hope to be a future mini yard sale. I’m all about getting rid of things that have been left untouched for years, or even months. Summer break is the perfect time to do so. The perks not only include de-cluttering, simplifying, and letting go of attachments to the past, but also rediscovering old items that now appear cool and new. My style and taste and interests are forever changing, so the things I once disliked have the potential of being presented to me in a totally new light. It’s like going to a yard sale or a thrift store – except it’s all my stuff and therefore free!

I wanted to share with you some of my recent findings and hope to inspire you to take the time to look through your room (and if you don’t live at home anymore to take a trip there) and see what you can a) get rid of and b) find new purpose in. Feel free to tell me your discoveries – I ‘d love to know!

Love this personalized, looks-like-a-kid-made-it beaded bracelet I think someone gave me for my Bat Mitzvah. The other has a heart shaped charm with my name engraved in it.

Found this lunchbox in a cabinet in the kitchen. Found a bunch of cool cards I can frame as wall art. Found this tin full of candy perfect for earrings, buttons, or little trinkets!

Mom’s old shorts I’d taken from her closet years ago, a pair of gloves from my grandmother, and a pink harmonica bought by a friend in Michigan.

Tiny book my best friend gave me one birthday. Going on the bookcase in my apartment.

Beads spelling out my name. Could make a bracelet or incorporate them into a crown.

Hat I got for $1 last year, supposedly Amish made. This summer I really want to try to start wearing it.

Unworn shoes hidden in the back of my closet I jazzed up with some new shoelaces. Shoelaces, or ribbon, are an inexpensive way to transform your shoes.

Snapshots of some of my childhood books. I love the illustrations!(From top to bottom: Madeline’s Rescue by Ludwig Bemelmans, Moostache by Margie Palatini, The Giant Jam Sandwich by John Vernon Lord, Arthur’s Valentine by March Brown, A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon, Pigs in the Mud in the Middle of the Rud by Lynn Plourde, The Little Ballerina by Katharine Moss, Never Take A Pig To Lunch by Nadine Barnard Westcott, Angelina and the Princess by Katharine Holabird, Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin by Lloyd Moss, and Walt Disney’s CinderellaOne Hundred and One Dalmations (I have a whole stack of these Disney books of the movies in illustrated, picture book form))

What’s also always fun (and mortifying) to look back on when I’m at home are my journals. I might have to take them back with me to Chicago to use as material for my comedy writing course in the upcoming semester. ūüėČ

WHAT I WORE: FREE IMPROV FRIDAY, MAY 25

I wore this number yesterday to a free improv show. Aside from doing improv, I love going to see it and supporting other improvisers. ¬†The show was put on by Project Improv at The Bard’s Town Bar/Theatre. This upcoming Thursday there will be another free show. And what could better than¬†free¬†improv (or free anything for that matter)?!

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Happy one year anniversary, blog…38 days ago!

As you can see from my neglect to realize the anniversary of my blog, I haven’t been the greatest at maintaining this site. For the past several days, I’ve been debating back and forth whether to keep up with this blog or not. While just recently I’ve begun to get more than two views a day, I’ve had yet to gain actual followers. Is this blog even worth my time? Do I even have the time for it? Why would I continue even though I hardly post? What’s the point???? ¬†(These are things one thinks about during the idle days of summer break.)
Many times in my internal struggle to blog or not I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no purpose in continuing. I could spend my time instead reading or socializing. Once school began again who’s to say I’d even have time or want to devote my time to blogging. On the other hand, the thought of pushing myself to create on a daily basis and the rewards that it might bring appeal to me. I want to hone my writing skills and be part of a blogging circle.

That’s why I’ve decided I’m not going to quit. Instead, I’m going take this next year to change the direction of my blog and try something else instead of giving up.¬†I’m allotting myself and this blog ONE MORE YEAR to gain followers and make its way somewhere into a blogging community. And after years of blog-following I’ve noticed one key element that makes a blog so popular: the blogger themselves.¬†Therefore, I’ve decided to turn the focus away from sharing things I love to sharing things about me and my everyday life.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s about to get real personal up in here.

I’ll begin by introducing myself, which, oddly, I’ve never done.¬†

Naomi, 20 years old, spending my summer in my hometown of Louisville, KY. However, 8 1/2 months out of the year I spend my time in Chicago, IL where I attend Columbia College Chicago for Theatre-Acting. My hopes include a lot of improv and starring on a television sitcom. My dream is to be a cast member on Saturday Night Live. It’s actually good timing that I’ve decided to make my blog more personal because this upcoming fall I’LL BE STUDYING AT THE SECOND CITY (! (through Columbia)). Yep, you read that right. Home of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, Joan Rivers, John Belushi, Mike Meyers, Dan Akroyd…I could go on forever. In other words, basically everyone you’ve ever seen on Saturday Night Live ever or anyone that makes you laugh so hard you lose about 20 lbs in one sitting. I am beyond excited!

Aside from that piece of information, there’s not much else I can think of to share at the moment. By now you should have an idea of my interests, the blogs I follow, my favorite colors, etc. And don’t worry, I’ll keep creating those kinds of posts in between the rest. Be on the lookout for daily outfits, photo-an-hour posts, the occasional iMovie-made video, and general documentation of my everyday life.

I can now confidently say HAPPY VERNAL EQUINOX! to everyone (go otuside)! The trees are in bloom, the sun is staying out past 7, and the whole world smells delicious.
I find it magical how, almost overnight, the barren streets transformed into this dreamy, saturated, fairy-tale like place where every time I go outside all I want to do is break out in song and dance and twirl around the budded trees as if I were in some technicolor, springtime musical.

So, without further ado, here’s a mini lookbook inspired by my new favorite season.
